Welcome to the Rio Grande Ranches in Costilla, County Colorado. This area is known for its hundred mile views. Here you are surrounded on all sides by the Colorado mountain ranges. You have the Sangre de Cristos to the east and the San Juans to the west. The 360 degree views from the valley are my favorite. Seeing the layers of purple and blue mountains all around you without any restriction gives you a feeling of freedom, it’s how nature intended us to be.
With 5 acres of Colorado land, you have room to roam and spread out without neighbors or obstructions. Pull the camper out for relaxing weekend retreats and cool summer getaways or building your cabin in the mountains and stay a while. Vacation in the area and see all the geological phenomena in the San Luis Valley and go “home” minutes away to your private oasis. You can enjoy coffee on your patio waiting for the sun to peek over the Sangre de Cristos or watch the sunset beyond the San Juans over a crackling campfire. You just can’t experience that from a hotel or a crowded campground.
Activities in the area depend on the action you are looking for. Outdoor enthusiasts love the area for hiking, biking, climbing (two 14ers in full view here.), water sports such as kayaking down the Rio Grande, and exploring. Nature buffs enjoy living off the land. They call themselves off-gridders, dry dockers, survivalists, or hippies but they all have one thing in common…they love the San Luis Valley for its uncommercialized, raw land. Others come to be a part of the culture and history of the area. There are museums and local festivals that celebrate the people and land. The farmers markets, roadside stands, and local artisan shops are a must all summer long. Don’t miss sand sledding at the Great Sand Dunes, soaking in a natural hot spring, gazing at the stars in a Dark Sky Park, or hiking back to Zapata Falls, they are rare and amazing sites you can only find in a few places around the world. Or you can sit back in a hammock and soak up some Colorado sun. Lazy days on the porch appreciating the view is an acceptable pastime in this slow paced paradise.
When it comes to location, you have the best of both worlds. The town of San Luis is minutes away and can provide all your immediate needs. Alamosa is 45 down the road (you won’t mind the scenic drive.) and has all the small city luxuries such as big box stores, restaurants, hotels, medical facilities, and entertainment. If you must go back to the chaos of the cities, you can go north to Pueblo (less than 2 hrs), Colorado Springs (less than 3 hrs), and Denver (less than 4 hrs). If you go south, you can hit Sante Fe (less than 3 hrs) or Albuquerque (less than 4 hrs). As you can see, your wilderness outside of the hustle and bustle is half a day’s drive to several major cities complete with overcrowding and road rage. You will love to come home to the Rio Grande Ranches.
