Home Reservoir, Smith Reservoir, and the Rio Grande run right through the valley) off-roading, natural spring soaking, and tourist activities. You should definitely google The Great Sand Dunes and Zapata Falls. Or..If you are here to relax you can do some hammock swinging, front porch sitting, stargazing, and take a lot of pictures of the sunrise over the Sangre de Cristos or sunsets over the San Juans. It is a magical place that transports you to another time… an easier, less chaotic time.
Everyone loves the idea of being away from it all but what happens when you need essentials or a meal you don’t grill yourself? Fort Garland is a small town with lots of charm. You can get the immediate necessities such as gas, groceries, and some hardware items. Alamosa is less than an hour drive and has big box stores, medical facilities, schools, restaurants, hotels and entertainment. It is a small city with a lot of local activity such as town festivals, holiday events, cultural experiences, local artisan shops and eateries. We don’t miss the farmers markets and road side stands throughout the warm months.
Pueblo, Colorado Springs, and Denver are less than half a day’s drive north and get you back to the mega cities. Alamosa has a small airport that commutes to Denver International. This is a great location just outside of the cities.
